PUBLIC PETITION AGAINST SLAVERY ON 21ST CENTURY AND DEMANDING FOR THE LIBERATION OF ALL SLAVE CHILDREN AT LAKE VOLTA, IN GHANA In Ghana, there are 3 and 4 years old children who are sold by their own parents, for less than € 30, to traffickers who resell them to be enslaved by fishermen on Lake Volta, the biggest artificial lake in whole world. These children work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, under any weather condition, ill or healthy. |
They are called kobies and kofies according to the day they were sold. They don’t know their age or identity. Many of them die, drowned on the lake or murdered by the fishermen who throw them alive to the alligators. Rescuing one of these children doesn’t solve the problem because, in the next day, the fisherman replaces her with two new children… and the childhood keeps being stolen to these children, a bit every day, before the permissive look of many people and authorities, which prefer not to see. In spite of children slavery and traffic being a crime in Ghana, the truth is that there are no trafficker or fisherman condemned or in jail. The thing that can stop the 21st century slavery is our indignation and disclosure of this violation of the Human Rights. Now that you’re aware of what is happening, you won’t become a silent accomplice of this situation. It’s the INDIFFERENCE that is killing Ghana’s children.
